The word "genesis" means "beginning".
In this book, God tells us who He is and why and how he created the earth. As the picture shows, God created the sky, the clouds, weather, plants and animals.
In genesis, God tells us that we are His most important creation. Genesis also tells about some important people including Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.
Did you know that the birth of Jesus is foretold in Genesis? Although it is the first and one of the oldest books in the bible, Genesis tells us a lot about today and the future.
The word "exodus" means "the way out".
This book tells how the Egyptians held the Israelites in captivity in Egypt.
It also tells of the wonderful deliverance or "way out" that God gave them. Moses was chosen by God
to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. During that journey, Moses and his people faced many problems including
forty years in the wilderness. The picture shows Moses receiving the ten commandments from
God. Do you know all of the ten commandments? If not, you may want to read this book of the
bible to learn more about how we should live if we believe in Him. Even more important, the new testament tells
how Jesus brought us new way of understanding the ten commandments and how we could be forgiven even
if we broke the commandments. Why don't you now go back and click on Matthew, Mark, or Luke to learn more about
how Jesus helps us see the true meaning of the commandments.
Can you imagine
soldiers blowing trumpets and many people shouting and watching the great wall of Jericho fall down?
Well, that is exactly what happened under Joshua's command! God chose Joshua to take Moses' place in leading
the Israelites from the wilderness into the promised land. Along the way, they had many problems including
this battle in Jericho. It is said that Joshua was eighty-five years old
when he started leading his people! In spite of his age, Joshua led his people
through many battles to victory. Because Joshua trusted God, he was able to
finally lead his people into a life of rest and victory. We too, can have victory through faith in Jesus.

The Hebrew name
for this book in the bible is "The Book of Praises." Some of the psalms are
prayers while others are songs. All of them express the feelings of those who wrote
them; sometimes joy, sometimes sorrow and sometimes fear, just as we sometimes feel. It is believed that David wrote over 70 of the psalms.
The photograph of a "lyre" shown on your left, is a harp-like stringed instrument played by David.
As a shepherd, David played the lyre while sitting in the field and praising God with his melodies.
Later, David played the lyre for King Saul who was sick. This harp and other stringed instruments described in the bible,
are still made today by a company called The House of Harrari, P.O Box 1577, Jerusalem, Israel. Perhaps the
most well-known psalm is the twenty-third psalm. If you click on the button below, you
will hear this psalm set to music. Please listen for the lyre in this music and try to
imagine how David's lyre might have sounded as he offered his musical praises to God.
